John Manning Arthur, age 83, passed away quietly in his sleep at his Abilene home on Monday, February 23, 2009. A longtime resident of Brownwood, John was born on June 12, 1925 in Comanche, Texas the son of the late John Hilburn and Ernestine Atwood Arthur. Graduating from Comanche High School in 1942, Arthur served his country in the U. S. Navy as an Ensign graduating from Officer Naval Training Corps of Northwestern University on Lake Michigan. During the service, he met and married Geraldine Starkey, 2nd class Pharmacist Mate, Navy while in Bremerton Washington. The couple married September 14, 1946 in Comanche, Texas. Arthur graduated from Texas A & M in the class of 1946 and was recently honored with a pair of Senior boots at Kyle Field football game on Veteran's Day with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and President George H. W. Bush present in the reviewing stand.

Arthur's professional career with TxDOT, began in Breckenridge in 1947, taking him to Lampasas in 1953, and finally to Brownwood District 23 where he served as head District Design and Right of Way Engineer. From there he worked for Freese and Nichols Engineering firm as resident engineer for the Lake O. H. Ivie Dam Project and then in San Antonio as resident engineer for the Applewhite Dam Project. Upon retirement, he acquired his Real Estate Brokerage License as well as several other educational venues. He loved traveling with his son, Steve and the Texas A & M Traveling Aggies Association.

John was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church for 49 years and served on all committees. His numerous interests were sailing, golf, boat design and building, gardening, kite building and flying, astronomy, hunting, fishing, boating, ranching, woodworking, computers, and playing various musical instruments with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his only brother and sibling, Gene H. Arthur, a nephew, Rex Arthur, and his beloved and greatly missed son, John Steven Arthur, M.D. who recently passed away on January 22, 2008.

His immediate survivors are his wife of 62 years, Geraldine, and a daughter, Sheryl Arthur Haney both of Abilene and Brownwood. He is remembered fondly by his grandchildren and adopted in-laws by heart; G. Lee Haney and Danielle Diane Delhomme. Grandchildren, Allison Arthur Cowling and husband Brad, Angela Arthur Zuyus and husband Elton, Robin Lynn Arthur all of Abilene, and Byron Arthur Haney and wife Janie of Kingwood, Marshall Blake Haney of Brownwood, and LaShan, Josh, and Vicki all of Abilene. He is also survived by 6 Great Grandchildren all of Abilene.

Pallbearers for the service will be the grandson-in-laws. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Zee Baker, Wes Heald, Bobby Conner, John Arthur Thomason, Herman Moore, Wayne Turner, Bill Turner, Glenn Trotter, and Bill Crumley.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 PM on Thursday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Canon Nelson Koscheski officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Park. Family visitation will be held from 1 – 3 PM prior to the service.

The family has requested memorials be made to St. John's Endowment Fund, P. O. Box 26, Brownwood, Texas, 76801.
